We've been talking over the last few days about human resouces and staffing issues. We've also discussed how one of the stakeholders that businesses should be concerned about is their internal stakeholders-employees. I'd like you to read this article from the Wall Street Journal

and answer the following questions:
What will it really take to get equal respresentation at the top-level of Fortune 500 companies? Why do you think that most companies claim to promote diversity however there is not equal pay for all employees? Or equal representation at all levels of the organization? Do you think that the discrepancies are intentional or unintentional?
Why do you think that this topic is included as part of Corporate Social Responsibility?

It will take a lot of things for women to change in order to represent at the top of a company. For instance, she would not be able to get pregnant, or sick or married because all of these things slow a career down, especially for a woman. A lot of companies claim to promote diversity but pay less to a woman because as companies put it, they don’t build up the tenure that leads to promotions, and higher salaries, or they don’t demand raises as often as men because they’ve been socialized not to be assertive, or they don’t have the right skills for the best-paying job. Some of the discrepancies are intentional and some are unintentional. Some intentional discrepancies are for example that women and minorities don’t have the proper skills and education, companies don’t want someone like that to lead a company because they need to be wanted by the general public and therefore think that a woman or a colored person would make the company look weak or bad in the eyes of the customers. Some unintentional discrepancies would be probably no position open at the particular time, not assertive enough, too kind to everybody. I believe that this topic is included as part of Corporate Social Responsibility because after all race and gender are the social responsibility of a corporate system.
the article mentions some reasons that a pay gap exists, including time taken for childcare, the assertive nature of men, and the lack of skills women might have. i certainly don't think lack of skills is a illegitimate reason, bu the first two are good points. in the article she doesn't take any time to respond to thee theories either. i think it is true, men are selfish money driven egotistical brutes. these characteristics are very handy in the business world. i do think that the pay gap will deteriorate though because as more women do get hired, and as a greater number drift up into management, then even more women will get hired (by those women in management) and the process with then speed up even more, until there is no disparity.
The only way women will get equal representation at these top level companies is by either joining a union or taking this to an equal rights commision. Well by claiming diversity you are not promoting equal pay. Either you have an equal right that includes equal representation , equal pay and equal everything or you dont. I believe they are unintentional. The company dosent do this to women and minorities to save money. It all depends on whose behind the staff management. Yes this topic should be in the CSR because it is a responsability that companys still havent completed.
I think it will take many years until women will be treated equally. However, we can not denying the fact that they have already achieved a lot because in the beginning of 20th century women didn’t have even half of that rights that they have today. For instance, comparing today’s women’s salaries with earnings that they had in 60s and 70s, we can see that their income has risen by about 20-25%. On the other side, the number of women graduating from colleges is much greater than the number of men and many females are more qualified than men. And companies that promote diversity or equal representation at all levels of organization, in my opinion, act unintentionally because anyway companies continue to hire women and minorities, but the reason women earn less is that they still don’t have enough influence in society as men do. This topic includes a part of CSR because according to that companies are responsible for all types of discrimination. In our case, people must be hired, evaluated, promoted, and rewarded on the basis of value, not personal characteristics.
Equal representation will take Time. White males have been running business in America since its discovery, and since the shift to a diversified workforce has occurred recently, they still make up the majority of CEO’s and top executives. The discrepancies are somewhat unintentional because of the same issue; white males have been in control for a long time. Also, if a minority accepts lower pay, they are causing businesses to assume that other minorities will do the same. The issue needs to be dealt with on both ends, big business needs to diversify, and minorities need to demand equal pay.
I feel it is going to take years and years until the workplace is equal for everyone. As for women try to be equal they need to do things to be noticed, such as speaking up for themselves. Men tend to ask for raises more often than women even if both sexes have the same education level. I think women should apply more often for the top spots in the fortune 500 companies. Males of a race other than white should also being trying harder to make these companies see them. I think the companies should also look to hiring others than just white males. you never know what someone can do for the company until you give them a chance.
Women have come a long way in the working world dominated by men. Id hate to say it may take a long time more for women to take over or get equal representation but it will. The busineess world weather people like it or not is comtrooled by rich white males. Thats not always the best thing becuase male tend to be more greedy and corrupt than women. I feel like we should have equality in the wroking world wherever it may be. between whits women and other ethic groups. but like i said it will take a long time for this to change.
I dont think that it is ever going to be equal in the workplace. as long as people have eyes and brains they are going to see someone who is different and make an opinion base on their appearence. i think it would benefit all if there was more diversity at the top of a company so there can be different opinions seen on how that company can be run.
