So what can we do??

We've been critiquing companies as to what they are doing to contribute positively to the environment in which they operate. As we close this exercise, I'd like to ask you what can you do to make a positive impact on the environment?

National Geographic aired an interesting documentary titled "The Human Footprint" where they show exactly how much waste every American will generate in the course of his or her lifetime. This includes things the foods we eat, the personal hygiene products we use, the clothes we were and the resources that go into making those products. I'd like you to check out the link to National Geographic located here:http://www.nationalgeographic.com/preserveourplanet/index.html

Please take a look at the "Carbon Calculator" - and see what you can do to reduce your carbon emissions. Please post your thoughts to the recommendations here.

I think that people do not have enough information on how much waste they put out per year and if it is such a big issue than the goverment should put more information out there. Personally I think I could do things like recycle but as far as driving goes no way, I drive a V8 and theres no way I would go to a V4 and many people that already drive bigger engine cars feel the same way. The car companys should make a better emission big engine car which I think companys are already striving towards.

we can start by driving less. turning off heating where we dont need it, recycleing, turning off electronics we dont use ex. computer. maintaing our vehicle in better shape

Cutting down on pollution is going to take time, cooperation of the entire planet, strict laws, and ethics. Until a large scale movement is started it is almost pointless. One person will not make any difference when we have entire countries with no pollution laws. America could set an example, but to get other countries to follow will be difficult.

Of course, it is very important when people care about the environment. And there are lots of things people can do to reduce their carbon emission. Personally, I have to pay more attention to recycling plastic bottles and glasses as well as aluminum cans and containers, and paper. Also, I can use reusable grocery bags instead of plastic. What considers driving, now I’m looking forward to buy a small economy or hybrid car. I think, these are the easiest things to do to maintain our planet.

I agree with some of my classmates about personal waste. A lot of people don't have a clue as to how much of waster they're putting out. Most of us are either too busy with our everyday routine, or don't know how to calculate the amount of waste we put out during out lifetime. I should pay more attention to turning off electronics that i don't expect to use for a while, try to recycle more, and also try to use more "Green" friendly products around the house, like light bulbs, and recycled paper.

i think the answer is in an increased awareness and effort in helping the environment and so on. plus, as technology gets better, it won't even be so much a cost issue. another thing, recycling for example, i work at a restuarant in skokie, where we obviously go through lots of recyclable material. my boss would recycle them if it wasn't such a burden. skokie, however, doesn't offer recycling, and my boss would have to hire a private collection company to take away the recyclables. if efforts were made to make it easier to help out, so it would not have to be a trade off: either pay money and help, or the opposite, then people would do it anyway.

As the others have said, I think more needs to be done to increase awareness because in order to make a difference more people have to get involved. I have already switched to CFL bulbs, I use reusable grocery bags, and I recycle plastic, glass, and cans. But I could cut back on the amount of paper towel I use and start recycling paper. It would also be nice to see local government do more to help reduce waste and emissions.

i think that all people should see this to see what they are doing to the enviroment. if everybody knows how much waste were producing it would give them the push they needed to start doing something about it. it is going to take a world-wide effort for any significant change to happen and we can all start by recycling more often, using less electricity, carpooling or using more public transportation, and getting more hybrids into the market.

There are many things we can do to help the enviroment. We can use less electricity and turn devcies off when there not in use, or we can car pool to work or school to cause less pollution, even using a different light bulb could help. I think that people are aware of what needs to be done they just need to act more on it.

I think that showing people how much waste they use over a lifetime is not going to do much because they are still going to be driving there big cars and doing what they want. the only way people would stop is if they coudnlt use as much things and couldnt throw out as much waste.
